THEME OF THE SYMPOSIUM:

The last large-scale attempt to provide a synthetic treatment of the
religious ideas of the Dead Sea Sect was that of Helmer Ringgren, The Faith
of Qumran, published in 1963. Since then, but especially in the past ten
years, many new texts from the Dead Sea Scrolls have been made available.
The work of editing these "new" texts is now virtually complete.
Consequently the time is at hand for a new synthesis. This conference is
intended as a preliminary step in the process. It will address several
major aspects of the religion of the Scrolls: Papers will discuss the the
community's understanding of God and its beliefs about the heavenly world
and the end of the age. Another paper will discuss the derivation of these
beliefs from the Hebrew scriptures and other sources. Another will consider
the religious practice of the sect, as expressed through the priesthood and
cult. Highlighting the conference will be the presentation by Martin Hengel
on the historical context of the scrolls and specifically on their debt to
Hellenistic influence. Hengel will revisit the reflections on Hellenism and
Qumran in his landmark work, Judaism and Hellenism, published thirty years
ago. The program for the conference is as follows:
