It is true that Antiochus the Great made certain concessions to
Jerusalem
and Judea in circa 198 BCE (see Josephus, Ant. 12.138-146) that resonate
with
11QT in forbidding the skins of impure animals to enter Jerusalem. But
this
is Jerusalem, not Leontopolis in Egypt, over which Antiochus did not
rule.
Onias IV built a temple in Leontopolis in the 140s, decades later, under
the
Egyptian ruler Ptolemy Philometer (Ant. 13.62-73).
So I am curious whether this alleged connection between Antiochus III
and
Leontopolis is (1) an error on Jim's part, or (2) the article he cites
[in
which case it hardly seems worth reading], or whether (3) the article
cites
novel arguments somehow linking Antiochus III and the later Oniad
temple(!).
Jim?
