THE DEAD SEA SCROLLS
AND THE FUTURE OF THE PAST
IN THE 21ST CENTURY

The Dorot Foundation is sponsoring an international symposium on THE DEAD SEA
SCROLLS AND THE FUTURE OF THE PAST IN THE 21ST CENTURY to be held at the New
York Public Library, Main Branch, April 21-22, 1998. This symposium will
commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls
by bringing together senior scholars from all over the world to discuss the
global implications and challenges posed by future major archaeological
discoveries.
Five major themes--each connected with the history of scroll scholarship and
of vital concern to archaeologists all over the world--will serve as the foci
of the sessions of the two-day symposium. The themes include Archaeology and
Politics; International Antiquities Trade; Decipherment of Ancient Texts;
Archaeological Interpretation for the General Public; and the Impact of
Antiquity on Modern Society.
Participants from the United States, Canada, England, South Africa, Greece,
Israel, and Jordan will address these issues and present their assessements
on future developments in archaeological interpretation, presentation, and
research.
