Re: bait not taken

I have been following the baiting of the supposedly ignorant -- and I feel
embarrassed. I thought it would simply peter out, but since it hasn't I feel
that I'll be committing a sin of omission if I don't react.
The query which aroused the furor was simply: What does CD stand for? The
simple question deserved a simple answer and then on with the scholarship.
As a regular reader of this list I have encountered some very acute insights
on the part of the supposedly ignorant person. Don't all of us miss simple
facts now and again? What not all of us have is the ability to look at "the
facts" with the understanding and judgement which comes from living in the
real world, and not only in academe. The kind of insight thus gained is
sometimes very salutorious for the atmosphere in the ivory tower.

May all of us enjoy the holidays they keep at this time of year. Peace on
earth good will to men ...
